What is Faith?

What is faith? Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance for what we do not see (Hebrews 11:1 NIV). What is faith to you? Think about Hebrews 11:1 and put into your own words.

If I put into my own words, faith is completely trusting in what we hope to be true and believing in what we cannot see.

The Good News tells us that God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.” (Romans 1:17 NLT)

Scripture also says that if you have faith as small as a mustard seed you can move mountains.  (Matthew 17:20- “You don’t have enough faith," Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith as small as a mustard seed, you could say this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.”

Those two verses alone reveal to us how significant and extraordinary faith is. Faith is the gas that runs our spiritual vehicles.

Now, knowing all of that; I hate to admit my faith is not as strong as I want it to be, or should be for that matter, and it bothers me. The Lord has revealed himself to me multiple times so I know he’s real, and I know he’s alive yet sometimes I still have a hard time trusting Him. I allow doubt and fear to make themselves at home kicking out any faith that resides.

Can you relate?

In my journey, there are some things we Christians call fundamental or foundational to a Christian walk that I’m just now starting to understand the complexity of, faith being one of them.

It’s something we ask for all time, yet I can truly say I feel like my heart never grasped faith completely until recently. I never understood it or its importance.

Faith is more than a word or an action. It’s a lifestyle.

I’m currently doing a devotional in the YouVersion Bible app titled: Bible Basics Explained | Faith http://bible.com/r/5O3  (Let me know if you want to do it with me) and I’m only on day two and it’s blowing my mind. It’s centered mostly around Hebrews 11 where the author talks about the ancients and how they lived in faith

Now even with my most recent revelation I won’t act as if I have mastered living in faith, but what I can say is this, I’m embracing the fact that strong faith does NOT come overnight nor does it come easy.

You can’t have unbreakable/unshakable faith without going through some stuff.

Take Caleb for an example. He along with the other Israelites traveled through the wilderness for forty years before they reached the promised land. You can imagine they went through a lot of trials in those years. Yet, when they finally arrived most of the Israelites were afraid to go in after they received some bad reports from the scouts. Caleb, however; gave a good report and tried to convince the people to trust God and not be afraid of the giants that were already there.

His faith didn’t come overnight nor did it come easy, but he believed in God without seeing God. Caleb trusted in God and his promises before ever seeing them come to fruition.

He had faith and in return the Lord allowed him and his descendants to see the land.

Hebrews 11:6 says, “And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.”

Can you honestly say you have strong faith? Or are you moving on up like me and the Jefferson's? (haha)

Why do you think it’s so hard for some people to believe in and have faith in God?

I have a theory. Hear me out.

I think it might be hard for some of us to have faith in God because we’ve been “conditioned” at a young age to believe if we can’t see it then it's not true.

Think about the tooth fairy, or santa claus, or the easter bunny.

We believed in those things wholeheartedly and then once we got older we discovered they weren’t true.

Now, I’m not at all saying God is the same as those things. God is real and those things are fake.

However, the mind is complex and maybe subconsciously those things planted an inability or shall I say difficulty of fully grasping the concept of faith.

Like I said, just a theory!

Nevertheless, my goal is to learn how to completely live in faith. To no longer worry about what I can see but to wholeheartedly live in faith. I encourage you to read and listen to Hebrews 11. It’s a game changer!

Do you have faith in the Lord? Does your heart truly believe Jesus is the Son of God? Do you trust that the best is yet to come? Do you believe that we are foreigners here on earth? Do you live in faith?

I'd love to hear from you!
